And we're back! ...with 8 keys to student success

It has been a while since we touched base, I hope summer has been treating you well!

I recently got back from my brother’s wedding in Barbados. It was spectacular and Sonny was the cutest / worst ringbearer who had an epic meltdown right as it was time for him to walk down the aisle. I like to think it added flare to the ceremony 🙃

Here he is at the reception, all smiles -

“Me? I didn’t make a scene. You made a scene.”

Tropics and toddler tantrums behind me, it’s time to gear up for back-to-school.

My goal in the coming weeks and months is simple: to help you and your teen have the best school year ever.

To kick things off, I’m sharing a recording of a workshop I did called The 8 Keys To Student Success (Part 1 is here and Part 2 is here). This is a deep dive into how teens get better grades in all subjects for the long term (without stressing or late nights or you, their parent, nagging).

In detailing the strategies that turn struggling students into confident learners, this workshop provides a blueprint for how to “do” school in a way that helps your teen:

  • 🖐️take ownership

  • 🧠 feel smarter

  • ⌚️ get (and stay!) organized.

Check out Part 1 here and Part 2 here, and feel free to share with anyone you think might benefit.

Note: tips and tricks can be helpful, but at the end of the day there aren’t any shortcuts to transformative learning - the kind that extends far beyond getting good grades and into building capacity for sustained growth and skill-building for life (more on the importance of building capacity here, about a third of the way down).

…hence why there is no fluff in these trainings and they’re each about an hour long 🤓 The ROI for watching and taking notes is strengthening your own vocabulary and toolkit to help your child feel better about school and about themselves - especially how smart and capable they truly are.

Last but not least for today -

I work mostly with high school and university students, but am often asked what (high quality, evidence-based) resources are available for younger kids. I haven’t come across many resources that I would personally vouch for but recently learned that Netflix has a podcast series for kids.

It was created by a childhood development expert and uses stories to help kids understand and build skills. I love it. And even though it’s marketed as “bedtime stories,” the episodes are a good listen at any time (hi, long car rides). If you have younger kids or know anyone who does, check it out below and pass it on!
